Three-spined tree with dangerous thorns and edible pulp
This feature rich note describes a large thorny tree common in the eastern USA with 5 inch needle sharp thorns and a purple brown pod. The three spined plant is invasive in some regions and provides windbreaks and shade. It notes edible pulp and wildlife use, plus a thornless cultivar for tree houses. John Nelson at the A C Moore Herbarium offers free identifications.
