Aiken County Faces Growth. Plans 20 Year Ahead for Growth
South Carolina ranks 24th in population growth with an estimated jump of 51 000 residents. Aiken County added about 20 000 people in the past decade rising from 144 700 in 2002 to 162 812 in 2012. City populations in Aiken and North Augusta grew by more than 3 000 since 2002. County planners project continued rapid growth requiring road and precinct adjustments. Planning director Stephen Strohminger notes studies like the 2012 U S 1 U S 78 corridor plan guiding future traffic and business districts. He cites Whiskey Road as near capacity and foresees future connector roads. The 2035 outlook estimates area households rising from 6 500 in 2006 to about 10 000. Strohminger remains confident in preparation for ongoing growth.
