South Carolina House Opens 84 85 Budget Debate

The South Carolina House opened debate on the 1984 85 state budget as Gov. Riley’s education improvement plan looms. Rep. John Bradley urged funding for the education act while Rep. Robert Sheheen proposed a $90 million reallocation within the budget to finance a scaled down program without a sales tax hike. Several lawmakers planned similar amendments to find extra education money, with Riley supporters arguing a sales tax hike remains the only solution. The debate follows cuts totaling $300 million in three years and 2,931 state employees laid off.
