Extradition set in double murder case Kneece

Etheridge Kneece of Trenton, charged with paying two people up to 40000 to kill Joanne Kneece and James Floyd Suggs in Arkansas, will be extradited after Gov. Hodges signed the order following the attorney general's recommendation. Cushman and Baughman, Kneece's relatives, face two counts of capital murder in Arkansas.

Cemetery restores vandalized statues at Sunset Memory Gardens

Sunset Memory Gardens replaces seven marble statues valued at about 750000 after a 1996 vandalism incident. Tammie Phelps notes Stewart Enterprises ordered replacements piece for piece. Restorer says the cemetery has reestablished all statuary amid ongoing restitution of 90 dollars from the three suspects.

Aiken Prep plans PK 12 expansion to serve local families

Aiken Preparatory School will add pre kindergarten through 12th grade, becoming Aiken County's only private independent PK 12 school. The board approved the plan on December 9, with a formal announcement planned for Friday. The current 4K to 9th grade program serves about 160 students. boarding will end in 2000 2001.

South Carolina Board Endorses National Science Standards

The S C Board of Education approved the National Science Education Standards guiding kindergarten through 12th grade in life earth and physical sciences. Dr Jeff Priest of the Ruth Patrick Science Education Center praised the move as guiding teachers toward stronger science literacy in the new millennium. The standards include evolution teaching for grades nine through twelve and reflect a national debate sparked by Kansas leaders. Glenn Wilson has been active in local Aiken County education discussions as this story moves to page 5A.

Atkinson Designed Engines and Rode With Cavalry

Bob Atkinson, a lifelong aviation enthusiast and aircraft engine designer, spent a year with Gen George Custer’s old 1st Cavalry Division’s 7th Regiment as a reserve officer at Fort Bliss. Though he never rode again, his year in the cavalry helped shape his unique career blending glider soaring, engineering, and military training.
