mystery plant becomes widespread weed in southern landscapes
John Nelson of the University of South Carolina notes a hardy plant that can reach 5 to 6 feet, forming dense clumps and spreading if not pruned. It naturalizes from North Carolina to Florida and west to Texas, Arkansas, endangering native species in the wild. Florida faces the worst problems as birds spread its seeds. The Herbarium offers free identifications at 803 777-8196.
