Winter Months Signal Tree Planting Season on SC Farms
The season begins as Bobby D. McGee of the USDA notes, with Aiken County farmers replanting harvested timber lands in loblolly and longleaf pines. Seedlings at 6x10 to 6x8 feet aim for 700 to 900 per acre, available from the South Carolina State Commission of Forestry, planting through early March. Proper protection from freezing, drying, fire, and grazing is required for survival, and soil must be packed around roots. Hand planting yields 1–2 acres per day per person, or 10–15 acres daily with a mechanical planter. contour planting helps erosion control and moisture retention.
