Security Federal Corp. announces Tim Simmons retires as President and CEO effective Jan. 1. He will remain chairman of the board and a bank director while J. Chris Verenes becomes his successor as CEO. Simmons will continue on the holding company board and on key committees.
USC players Alshon Jeffery and Stephen Gilmore announce their NFL Draft plans. Jeffery is listed as the 40th overall prospect and 5th receiver. Gilmore is placed 50th overall and 7th cornerback. Separately Scotty Richardson benefit organizers expect a large crowd at a breakfast Saturday 8 to 10 a.m. at Fatz Cafe 996 Pine Log Road with $7 tickets available in advance.

Casey Warrick, from Windsor, welcomed two Afghan puppies named Munchkin and Spot at Hartsfield Jackson after long flights from Dubai to Amsterdam to Atlanta. She cared for Robo the mother dog in Kabul where the litter of six was born. Warrick’s bond with Robo grew during their time at the base with the 877th Engineer Company.
Monetta resident Tony Wallace Dorn 39 is charged with two counts of felony resisting arrest trespassing and disorderly conduct after he assaulted Officer Gerald Taylor twice on New Year’s Eve in Ridge Spring. Taylor sustained two broken fingers a sprained wrist two black eyes and multiple bruises. The incident began when Dorn yelled at Taylor’s patrol car and then punched the officer in the Orchard Park Apartments parking lot.
Area troops will take orders January 13 to February 1 with deliveries and on site sales February 24 to March 23. A Cookie Rally at First Presbyterian Church of Aiken will prepare the girls, Katie Miller says, noting last year’s sales reached 80 000 boxes and new packaging for Thanks-A-Lots.
