Belvedere District Tax Referendum Debate Faces Council

Aiken County Council backed a referendum to abolish the Belvedere Water and Sewer District, but officials warn dissolution may be unnecessary to refund the 93 mill tax. The 7-0 vote, with two abstentions, moves the issue to the legislature while debate continues on whether to dissolve the district or refund tax proceeds. Belvedere commissioners and Rep. Huff emphasize separating tax repeal from district status as protests mount over the tax and the district’s water-system purchase.
