SRS lawsuit claims firing was unjust
Nathaniel Ritter an 11 year Westinghouse Savannah River Co employee was fired in 1996 for sleeping on the job at the Savannah River Site. He alleges breach of contract improper termination and racial discrimination arguing a lack of progressive discipline and accommodations for narcolepsy. Ritter says he requested rest breaks and accommodations which were not provided while black workers faced harsher tasks. The federal judge referred the dispute to state court in Aiken County, with the case potentially moving there for contract claims and discrimination allegations.

Bechtel settlement in Savannah River accident suit
Aiken County couple Tammy and Ronnie Clark reach an undisclosed settlement with Bechtel Savannah River Inc after a mediation in Columbia. Tammy Clark, a decontamination operator for Westinghouse Savannah River Co, alleges a lead radiation shield fell on her on December 4 1996 causing injuries to her left leg ankle right wrist and left side. Savannah River Site attorneys had declined to discuss the case.

South Carolina unemployment inches up toward 4.7 percent
The state’s jobless rate rises to 4.7 percent from 4.4 as overall trends remain positive.
