New Year's hog jowl a Southern pork tradition
In the Deep South pork hog jowl is part of New Year rites served with black-eyed peas. James Dixon of Sawyer's in Little Rock says about 500 pounds will sell by New Year. Jowl comes smoked, salted or fresh like bacon and is tied to good luck with beans.
