Henry Cabot Lodge Dies at 82 in Massachusetts
Henry Cabot Lodge, Boston aristocrat and three term U S senator who clashed with the Soviet Union in the United Nations and helped shape U S policy from the Marshall Plan to NATO, died Wednesday at age 82. He also served as ambassador to Germany and as U S envoy to the Vatican. He chaired the U S delegation to Paris for the 1969 Vietnam peace talks and held the Vietnam ambassadorship amid expanding U S involvement in Southeast Asia.

The state Senate confirmed Raymond C. Baynham for the retiring magistrate post after a clash with Aiken County Council over funding the $30,000 position. Baynham will receive notice from the Secretary of State’s office soon as Judge Nichols retires Friday. Well Known Aiken Polo Player Lewis Smith Dies at 67
Lewis Smith of Azalea Place and East Aurora New York died in a Richmond County hospital at 67. A longtime polo figure he began in 1929 as the eighth woman on an all women team and earned a nine handicap, later receiving local and national honors including the Chamber of Commerce trophy in Aiken. He played with Seymour Knox Aurora and participated in the Americas Cup efforts in 1950 1966 and 1969. Northrup Knox called him one of America’s finest horsemen and players.
