Poll Respondents Call for Repeal of Blue Law in Aiken

Aiken County residents urge repeal or modification of South Carolina's Blue Law. In a reader poll by the Aiken Standard, 94 percent seek change with about two thirds favoring full repeal and the rest favoring modification. The survey drew 327 responses.

Aiken County Schools Drill For Tornado Preparedness Day

Aiken County schools planned a tornado drill today in recognition of tornado preparedness day. The drill began with a mock tornado warning from the National Warning Advisory Service and was coordinated by Bobby Mauney of the Aiken County Civil Defense with deputies directing students and teachers to protective shelters.

Tornado Safety Rules From National Weather Service

The National Weather Service outlines tornado safety steps for threats. Seek interior areas away from windows go to basements or lowest interior levels and use interior closets bathrooms and halls for protection. In schools hospitals and similar buildings move to designated shelters and avoid mobile homes or vehicles unless you can reach a sturdy structure. If no shelter is near lie flat in a ditch shielding your head.

Aikens Temperature Forecast Sees Clear Cold Tonight

The forecast calls for a clear and colder night with a low near 40. Tomorrow will be mostly sunny with a high in the mid 60s. The outlook shows fair skies and a warming trend through the weekend with lows in the 30s Friday and warming to the 40s by Sunday. Highs Friday in the 50s warming to the 60s by Sunday.

Legislation OK’d for headlights and mopeds rules

The House Education and Public Works Committee approved bills requiring headlights in fog or rain and setting a 14 year minimum with licensing for mopeds. An amendment delays tickets for one year with warnings only, and licensing starts after 1986. A grandfather clause and separate moped rules were discussed.

Moore Rips Not Hiring Magistrate

Sen. Thomas L. Moore accuses Aiken County Council of mishandling the decision to delay filling the North Augusta magistrate position, proposing Raymond C. Baynham to replace Judge Nichols upon retirement March 1. Gov Riley has accepted Baynham’s nomination, with Senate confirmation expected this week.

School Board Allows Public Presentations at Monthly Meeting

RIDGE SPRINGS The Aiken County Board of Education approved a policy revision to permit 15 minutes of public participation at the start of the second monthly meeting. Parents from Concerned Parents of Aiken High School voiced parity concerns with South Aiken High School and questioned stadium spending versus academic facilities. The board ordered a priority list for 1985 86 improvements focusing on accreditation deficiencies and voted to seek up to 45000 from Fund 5 for energy grant applications with T B Cox and Associates.

Concerned Parents Group Rips Aiken County School Board

About 100 supporters traveled the foggy two lane road from Aiken to Ridge Spring to address the school board. The newly formed Concerned Parents of Aiken High Students CPAHS held a rally in the Ridge Springs Elementary cafeteria with members wearing CPAHS stickers.
