Holley Objects To Clause In Magistrates Measure
Aiken magistrate Glenn Holley says he supports reducing the number of magistrates from 13 to four but objects to a higher salary for a licensed attorney magistrate. He notes his 20 years as a magistrate and law degree but questions paying a younger, less experienced lawyer more. The bill proposes one full time magistrate in Aiken North Augusta Wagener and Langley or Graniteville with salaries tied to circuit judge levels. The measure would set chief magistrate pay at 40 to 50 percent of a circuit judge, others at 30 to 40 percent, with total county salaries projected between 34 450 and 45 000 plus expenses. Last year 13 magistrates cost 62 473 25. Holley handles most criminal matters arising in General Sessions and sees about 500 cases annually on his docket plus 200–300 traffic cases monthly.

House Mace Recovered In Florida
A 35 year old former South Carolina Capitol security chief was charged with interstate transportation of stolen property after the silver mace disappeared from a locked glass case for three weeks. FBI traced the mace to a Gainesville hospital arrest and recovered it from a car owned by Charles Clayton Norton.
