After a spell of warm wet weather Aiken will see moderate weekend temperatures. Today will be cloudy with a high near 70. Thunder showers will increase tonight and tomorrow dampening weekend plans. Lows tonight and tomorrow in the 50s, with Sunday highs mid 60s and the driest day. Rain returns late Tuesday as a colder trend continues into early next week.
Sen Gilbert McMillan and Sen Michael Laughlin joined seven others in backing a bill to raise the state gasoline tax from seven to eight cents a gallon. The money would nearly double Aiken County road funds from farm to market and for metropolitan right of way projects, with half the new revenue going to farm to market and half to rights of way for urban transport. The plan includes a local 25 percent county share for right of way costs, estimated at about fifty thousand dollars annually, aiding a North Augusta metro road system. Rep Marshall Cain favors using farm to market funds for right of way but cautions against new levies, preferring a wait‑and‑see approach.
North Vietnamese forces overran a South Vietnamese paratrooper base in Laos and laid siege to another in what reports call the heaviest fighting of the war. Hill 31 fell after a 450 man battalion was nearly wiped out, with U.S. air power and helicopter gunships unable to prevent the loss. Two U.S. pilots were rescued after a downed aircraft, and the Lao incursion impeded the Ho Chi Minh Trail operation in southern Laos.
About 500 local representatives from the Association of Classroom Teachers gather in Columbia for a convention to press demands for higher salaries and desegregation issues. A Western Air Lines jet with 94 passengers including U S Army inductees landed in Vancouver after an apparent hijack from Medford Oregon. RCMP took a man into custody while passengers disembarked at 10 26 p m local time. A Seattle airport spokesman confirmed the landing and timing.

Los Angeles actress Asay Maynor, 28, sues TV star Edd Byrnes, 37, for divorce. The couple wed in 1962 and separated last October. Maynor seeks alimony and support for her 5-year-old son Logan, with a Thursday court filing.
The Earl of Ypres, grandson of Sir John French, told a bankruptcy court his debts reach 65988 dollars while assets total 84000 dollars including expected proceeds from publishing Sir John’s war diaries. He said he pawned medals and the field marshal's baton to make ends meet amid business reverses.
The bodies of 20 year old NC State University student Jessie Allen McBane and his girlfriend Patricia Ann Mann, a 20 year old student nurse, were found bound to a tree in a lovers lane area after leaving a Valentine's party on February 12. Sheriff C D Knight identified them as McBane of Pittsboro and Mann of Sanford. Autopsies were conducted at North Carolina Memorial Hospital in Chapel Hill.
A $2,374,000 Reflectone simulator will be installed at the Mobile Alabama Aviation Training Center. Delivery is set for June 1972. The computer operated trainer replicates HH52 and HH3F cockpits and simulates all flight conditions including emergencies for pilot training.

Firefighters from Graniteville and Aiken responded to a blaze at a building under construction in Warrenville Mill. The fire started near 9:45 p.m. and was under control by 10:38 p.m. An office area, roof, and some records were damaged as the Graniteville Company expands the site near U.S. 1.
