Aiken Trials Parking Drawings And Ticket Changes

Nearly all ticket types for the 40th Aiken Trials are described with advance prices and gate prices. A Saturday March 6 drawing will allocate reserved front and second row parking, with 73 front row and 75 second row spaces.

Aiken County Delegation Sets Public Meeting on School Autonomy

The Aiken County Legislative Delegation will hold a public meeting at Midland Valley High School at 7 p.m. Thursday March 4 to discuss the school board proposed 1982 program and fiscal autonomy. Delegation members say public input will guide whether autonomy or a referendum on tax authority is pursued, with strong opposition to autonomy from local residents.

Fund Down Yet Projected To Meet Budget In Aiken District

The Aiken County School District reports a smaller Impacted Area fund than last year but expects to finish the year with adequate money. Acting superintendent Dr. James J. Green said the district will receive 225 665 dollars less from federal sources than last year, with 22 721 dollars due by March 15 and the remaining Title I funds by September 30. He noted most of the about 3 000 students counted have parents working at the Savannah River Plant. The district may still end the year short due to 8 7 percent lower property tax receipts amid a county dispute over staff to process tax forms.

Bill to force adjournment for South Carolina lawmakers

North Augusta Rep. Tom Huff reports a House bill to require the General Assembly to adjourn on the fourth Thursday of May each year. He says deadlines spur faster action and notes the looming $2 billion budget and ongoing reapportionment disputes. Huff also cites a living will measure moving through the judiciary panel.

Former Worker Alleges Buried Chemicals at Wagener Landfill

Aiken County maintenance supervisor Jack Osbon claims out-of-county chemical drums were buried at the Wagener landfill in 1977 or 1978. Tape notes incident, including a drum bursting and fumes. Council to involve SLED and consider independent testing.
