An evaluation shows Belvedere Fire District improves protection class from 5 to better rates in the protected area to 5/9 outside. Field rating rep Carl L Frick Jr says rates drop for many insured commercial properties. New rates take effect March 1.
Former councilwoman Ellen S. Smith and political newcomer M. Earl Sasser announced their Republican bids for two seats on the North Augusta City Council. Smith, 12 year ex-council member, and Sasser, 39, a Columbia Nitrogen senior production engineer, live in North Augusta and hold degrees in education and chemical engineering respectively. Both are involved in local churches and civic groups ahead of the April 30 election.
The Senate Judiciary Committee approved a bill allowing open beer and wine containers in buses carrying over ten passengers and in limousines with a divider. Sen. Herbert A. Fielding said current law hurts tourism and some limos offer rear compartments with amenities but cannot serve alcohol.
North August council scene centers on Mayor Tom Greene simplifying a long annexation ordinance. After reading the ordinance in full, Councilman Dan Layman urged clarity about land location while Greene peered at a map and asked if everyone knows where the Krystal is.

The move aims to save taxpayers up to 100000 dollars while four full time and five part time magistrates cost 387567 annually. Gov Riley poised to decide on Sen Moore’s nominee Raymond Baynham faces the post.

National Can Corp announces a $40 a share tender offer to thwart Victor Posner. The plan creates a new preferred stock series lowering Posner’s stake, funds a $480 million bank loan, and requires the ESOP to hold at least 50.1 percent of voting stock after completion. Posner’s lawyer vows a challenge as the company sues for securities violations.
Aiken County coroner plans an autopsy in the North Augusta deaths of 9 month old Katherine Wood and 38 year old Gloria Flowers. Authorities describe circumstantial evidence with possible murder and self inflicted gunshot, while fingerprints and powder burns tests await results.
