Aiken County endures two day sleet and ice with up to six inches on roads and airports largely unusable. Civil Defense mobilizes nearly 200 volunteers in four wheel drive units to aid residents by transporting medical staff delivering prescriptions and food to those unable to reach care facilities.

Robert Collyer Blair 77 died Saturday after a long illness at his residence. A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church. Blair, born in Urbana Illinois, served in the Corps of Engineers and reached Colonel rank in World War II. He led the Savannah River Operations Office for the AEC in Washington and Aiken, later retiring in 1965 after 37 years of federal service. He held multiple civic roles including engineer of the year and Man of the Year by the local chamber of commerce.
The South Carolina Department of Youth Services may contract with Aiken County to detain juveniles after a county jail section closed. State officials may house youths in Lexington or North Augusta facilities at about 10.75 per day, with talks led by Grady A. Decell and county administrator L. C. Greene.
