County Sheriff opposes relocating jail communications center

Sheriff Paul D. Grant refuses to move the Aiken County communications system from the jail site until the department moves its entire administrative functions. Deduction Bill Tabled By Committee

Rep Judson Busbee joined a House Education and Public Works panel in tabling a bill that would have required school districts to deduct dues for teachers joining professional groups. The measure, backed by SCEA, faced two weeks of debate and faced cost concerns and possible impact on collective bargaining. Busbee noted districts may already make voluntary deductions.

Aikenite returns from Iran amid revolution turmoil

Jane Edwards daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Curtis W. Edwards of Aiken arrived back Monday after 19 months in Iran where she worked as a Bell Helicopter International production control specialist. She described martial law in Esfahan with curfew and gunfire and recounted dangers from street clashes and bombings while noting American victimization and anti western sentiment during the revolution.

Salley Woman Sentenced to Twenty Months in Jail

Edna Pontoon aged 26 pleaded guilty in general sessions court to stealing $5,000 found outside her Salley shop. Judge Rodney A. Peeples suspended a five year term to 20 months in jail plus 29 months probation and full restitution. A 17 year old Graniteville youth also received sentencing.
