Jurors to be chosen from a 35 member panel as the Paul F. Koon resentencing trial opens in Aiken County. Koon, 41, faces life imprisonment or the death penalty for the 1980 murder of Valerie White Newsome in Augusta and the case halted by venue concerns amid pre trial publicity. The state seeks the death penalty and the trial will be shorter with sentencing arguments and jury charges to follow.
Aiken County learns space will be unused in the new Agricultural Services Center due to funding gaps. Three agencies will lease less space, cutting the county's revenue by 2362 for this year and about 5624 annually thereafter.
