Riley Pushes Overhaul of South Carolina Probate Code

Gov. Dick Riley urged the General Assembly to unify and reform the probate laws. He said the current code is confusing and costly, harming the elderly, the disabled, and families, and proposed a single comprehensive Probate Code to simplify intestate distributions and guardianships. A surviving spouse could receive at least half the estate under the plan, unlike today when a widow with two children could inherit only one third.
