The U S Postal Service raises rates to 22 cents starting Sunday to cover operating deficits. Postmaster Farrell Rodgers of Aiken notes that rate changes aim to meet several years of anticipated needs. The prior increase lifted stamps from 18 to 20 cents.
The Aiken Chamber of Commerce supports relaxing South Carolina annexation laws to ease municipal growth. It urges protect ion for industrial and manufacturing operations existing at annexation time and will review bills from committee. Three House bills seem to address softer annexation requirements.
It will be fair and cold tonight with lows in the low 20s. Tomorrow will be mostly sunny with a high near 50. Sunday to Tuesday bring partly cloudy to fair skies with 20s and 30s lows and 50s to 60s highs.
North Augusta resident Frank Fortune Jr. is featured in Time this week with a photo credit on the side of the image. Ellie Smith planned a Valentine gift and first anniversary surprise for her husband SMITTY, a $25 heart shaped helium balloon, which escaped from the car trunk and floated upward. She signaled her husband to look up to see the balloon high in the air.
Jeremy Levin, the American journalist held in Beirut and Damascus for 11 months, escaped by tying blankets and sliding from a second floor, then boarded a jet to Frankfurt to reunite with his wife. He described solitary confinement and chained captivity, thanked supporters, and thanked Syrian soldiers before transfer to U.S. authorities.
Defense attorney Don Preston Williams waived the preliminary hearing for the December murder of Cyrus L. Howard, a Belk executive. The case moves to the grand jury with a March 25 term expected in General Sessions Court in Aiken County. Williams, 37, surrendered after Howard’s death in Augusta, later posting bond and being released.
At a Republican monthly meeting in Aiken, Rev. Clinton D. Henderson of Memorial Baptist Church condemned a state lottery as harmful to society while Sen. Ryan C. Shealy pressed for passage to fund indigent care. The event also welcomed Fay S. Hatcher to the party and announced a 1986 race opponent for Rep. Butler C. Derrick.
A new herpes treatment reaches Aiken area drugstores with an ointment from 1982 and the first oral prescription pill approved by the FDA on January 28. Burroughs Wellcome markets Zovirax as genital herpes remains the second most common sexually transmitted disease in the United States.
