McGhee Loses Bid For Flea Market Zoning Change

Bruce McGhee, owner of Aiken horse track, lost a unanimous Planning Commission vote on proposals to rezone Banks Mill Road property. He sought a flea market plus hotel, helicopter pad, restaurant with bar, telecom tower, spa and fitness center, but the commission said the items did not fit the equine neighborhood. The panel favored a tack shop as a possible special condition, while disallowing broader changes. a Zoning Board of Appeals would decide that option. McGhee did not attend the meeting amid protests warning of traffic and neighborhood disruption.
