Aiken County narrowed the administrator search to four candidates. An executive session of the council next Tuesday will review the round of inquiries, with a decision likely a month away. The post opened last September after the retirement of Shepherd, a retired Army colonel who served nearly eight years and helped lift the county from a deficit to a reserve fund around ten million dollars.
Aiken County plans first reading next week on an ordinance banning county employees from bidding on delinquent tax sale properties. Acting Administrator Joan Wilson said the Administrative Committee amended the measure to cover all county employees. Tax Collector Martin Posey urged the rule to curb potential insider trading after a South Carolina auditor allegedly assigned property to himself at a sale. The county’s annual November sale involves properties valued in the hundreds of thousands of dollars and allows owners to reclaim their parcels if overdue taxes are paid.
Five Hodges staffers were paid from other state agency budgets hiding almost $400,000 from the Governor's Office budget. Hodges spokesman said detailing is common among governors though Hodges did not know of it when he urged an audit into Beasley administration. In May 1997 Hodges led Democrats requesting a watchdog review of Beasley raises and use of outside funds for staff pay.
Eight students at North Augusta Middle School were kept home a week after officials say pills were passed among students. Administrators found no drugs on campus. confessions indicate swallowing or disposal of pills. The district cited the conduct code as a deterrent against contraband.
