Death penalty sought for Atkins trial in Carpenter murder

The county's chief prosecutor said the death penalty could be pursued in the Atkins case as early as this fall. Barbara R. Morgan filed notice with the South Carolina Court Administration to seek the death penalty for Robert Franklin Atkins in the 2000 slaying of 17 year old Jessica Carpenter, with a second attorney to be appointed and a judge named to preside. Perkins Brown, Atkins' public defender, will serve as second chair while lead counsel is appointed.

Artist Trish Arnold Shifts Focus From Gallery to Studio

Warrenville Man Identified in Sunday One-Car Crash on Schley Street

Ovadil Valladares, 36, of Pluto Lane, died at the scene when a 1999 Isuzu Rodeo driven by Jose Alberto Lopez left Schley Street, overcorrected, and rolled. Valladares was not belted. Lopez survived but was helicopters transported. hospital records later showed no admission. First responders and local EMS attended the crash.
