Battle of Aiken reenactment expands with two battles

The annual Battle of Aiken reenactment grows again drawing 12 000 spectators up from 5 000 eight years earlier. Officials expect two battles over the two day event with a projected economic impact of about 1 million dollars for Aiken. The Civil War anniversary weekend includes the Battle of White Pond on Saturday at 11 a.m. a Union victory per spokesman Pete Peters the Battle of Aiken Confederate victory at 2 p.m. and the Bombardier of Columbia on Sunday at 11 a.m.

Gas prices rise amid war scare awe in region

Gas prices creep up across Aiken County as Middle East tensions and war worries intensify. AAA Carolinas reports current averages around $1.51 a gallon with a four cent rise in one day. Colmba and Augusta prices also climb. local reaction varies.

State agencies face midyear budget cuts in South Carolina

The State Budget and Control Board ordered round of midyear cuts to all agencies totaling 170 million to keep the budget in balance. Legislative changes are due in five meeting days before 8.7 percent across the board reductions take effect. Gov. Mark Sanford called for prompt action after state revenues fell 120 million short of expectations and the shortfall may grow by 50 million.

Aiken County School District faces a further 2 million dollar loss after an 8.7 percent state agency cut. Board members grimly received the Budget and Control Board's notice that education funding is tightening as state revenue declines.

Graniteville National Guard mobilized for Operation Enduring Freedom

About 500 guardsmen from the 122nd engineer battalion of the Graniteville unit are mobilized and report to home stations. Lt. Col. Pete Brooks says they were mobilized Monday and await further deployment orders. Aiken officer Jake Mahoney and two colleagues are among those called to duty.

Flu Outbreak Lowers Attendance in Aiken County Schools

Health aide Adena Moore reports a two week flu surge at East Aiken Elementary with about 200 sick children last week. Absences fell from 90 of 600 to 60 this week while Silver Bluff High saw 205 absent last Friday drop to 102 Monday. Landis and Trevelas note ongoing disruption to instruction as medical excuses loosened and officials urge keeping students home 24 hours after fever ends.
