EdgartownMass officials could not explain the source of an oil slick that washed ashore South Beach killing hundreds of birds including ducks and loons. Volunteers gathered to rescue and wash oil covered birds at an MSPCA shelter and release them, though many birds died from exposure. A second slick near Nantucket Island measured about 150 yards and did not threaten shorelines.
