The Nixon administration told Congress it plans to remove all mandatory wage and price controls after April 30 except health and petroleum sectors. If approved, most of the U S economy would run without controls for the first time since August 1971.
Washington reports China’s ICBM program is advancing slower than expected. Officials now project a 1976 or 1977 readiness for a three megaton warhead capable 6,000 mile strike. Afterward three years of tests and base construction could yield 10 to 25 nuclear missiles targeting the continental United States.
John W Dean III former Nixon lawyer and chief accuser appears before a three judge panel in Alexandria Virginia to contest disbarment charges from the Virginia State Bar. The bar seeks discipline after Dean pleaded guilty to conspiring to obstruct justice and defraud the United States in the Watergate cover up.
Senate will vote again on a motion to cap a filibuster over U S ratification of a 25 year old genocide treaty. Backers faced a 55 36 tally short of the two thirds needed to end debate. Javits urged debate limits in the name of decency and humanity to bring the treaty to a merits vote.
Report states terrorists seized the Japanese Embassy in Kuwait and threaten to execute hostages unless four fighters from Singapore are allowed safe passage to Kuwait. A Singapore group holds three hostages on a ferryboat after failed refinery attack and asks to fly to Kuwait. The Japanese government agreed to send a plane to Singapore. Details on number of embassy attackers are unclear.
London reports that the national coal strike set to begin Sunday revived talk that Prime Minister Edward Heath will call a general election soon. Conservative sources say miners strike to pressure wage limits leaves Heath little choice but to seek voter backing for his policies. Cabinet members similarly cautious but not discouraging election speculation.
Aiken County schools borrowed 7 828 gallons of their February gasoline allotment to run nearly 200 buses in January. Worley reports 78 percent of 1972 purchases will be received for February, with needs 12 7 percent higher. He applies to the Federal Energy Office and hopes for February allotment by Feb 15.
Incumbent Ben C. Rusche holds at large seat with 2 248 votes, defeating Henry Fulmer. Emilie Towler wins Administrative Area No 1 after beating Olin Osbon 2 251 to 1 772. Reginald Bowleston uncontested with 3 644 votes. Osbon defeated as vice chair. board balance may shift at next meeting. Voter turnout 12 52 percent with strong Towler support in Aiken precincts and North Augusta.
John W. Carney executive director of the Downtown Merchants Association died at an Augusta hospital after several weeks of illness. Funeral services are set for noon tomorrow at South Aiken Presbyterian Church with Rev G Da na Waters III officiating. Burial will be private at Aiken Memorial Park. Carney, born in Pittsburgh, was retired in 1969 as manager of sales and promotions for Calgon Co Inc in Pittsburgh after 32 years with the firm.
The forecast calls for increasing clouds and warmer temperatures with a chance of thundershowers. Daytime highs in the mid 60s, tonight and tomorrow mid 40s to around 60, with rain chances 20 percent today and 50 percent tonight and tomorrow.
About 80 Summerfield residents led by James McCauley won a 9 day extension for garbage pickup and fire protection after the North Augusta City Council vote. Mayor Raymond Walters called gas line allocations tight and noted annexation petitions as a potential path forward.
Aiken City Manager Roland Windham said the Laurens Street Bridge, damaged by a tunnel collapse during storm drain installation, could be back in service in about 60 days. The project involves Southern Railroad ownership, ML McGee Construction, Patchen Mingledorff, and the state highway department. no official cause or timetable has been released.
