The Aiken Recreation Department reopens the Aiken Teen Town this Saturday at 8 p.m. The Augusta group The Mad Hatters will perform and tickets are sold at the door. Chaperones Mr. and Mrs. Fred Sides will accompany Miss Linda Moody, New Miss Aiken.
C Kenneth Powell will resign as South Carolina GOP chairman at a Friday news conference reported by the Greenwood Index Journal. Powell said he has done all he can in three years and may consider a run for lieutenant governor after the March GOP convention.
The South Carolina Department of Labor reports a 1.4 percent rise in food costs in the state from December to January. The monthly survey shows 61 percent of the 97 items in 10 areas increased in price, led by frying chickens up eight cents a pound and 10 pounds of potatoes up ten cents. pork sausage and bacon fell four cents.
Nixon told Congress that U.S. trade with Communist nations rose from 0.6 billion in 1971 to 3.1 billion in 1973 and the surplus grew from 0.2 billion to 1.9 billion. He warned several uncertainties remain in East-West trade, including state planning, lack of participation in international bodies, and currency convertibility.

Auto dealers across major cities report 50 percent drops in large car sales while Aiken shows a 30 to 50 percent decline. Tom Baker of Timmerman’s praises late model big cars selling out and warns of three to four month waits for small cars like Gremlin or Hornet. A meeting in Columbia gathered 40 of 46 South Carolina counties to plan a new clerical procedure for Clerk of Court offices. Aiken County Clerk Cleo Scott noted the plan aims to clarify case dispositions but would add paperwork, staff, and space needs. She cited space limits, with current capacity barely covering one more criminal term. The proposal requires warrants to be filed with the magistrate and copies to the public defender and solicitor, with docketing 30 days after each term.
Lee and Brennan stated there would be no rollback and the current pump price halt on diesel would not extend past one month. Truckers cited lack of assurances on duration and no surcharge to cover nonfuel costs as key barriers. Brennan noted transportation and ICC would study other trucker concerns.
