Suspect Abducts Man Then Fires On Officers In Aiken Chase

Police apprehended a suspect after abducting a man from Kalmia Plaza and firing at officers during a chase along SC 19 North and the Bypass toward USC Aiken. Bloodhounds searched 5000 acres near Vaucluse Road for William Bowick. A warrant was issued for assault with intent to kill.

Gunnells Seeks Change as Aiken Sheriff Elect

W Ralph Gunnells awaits taking office in Aiken County and outlines plans to reorganize the sheriff department. He says 43 of 77 staff will stay, 34 will be replaced, and 12 new positions created including 10 office posts.

Ralph Gunnells pledges nonretaliatory staffing changes and new drug control aims after defeating incumbent Paul Grant. He plans recertifications for eight deputies including chief Daniel Bowe and adds two narcotics agents and a full-time investigator. Gunnells says countywide funding ensures service for all and credits his win to hard work. He notes hiring of several Black employees and aims to crack down on drug trafficking. The Rotary Club event followed his introduction by Gary Owensby.

Aiken Cablevision to Expand Service Across Aiken Area

Aiken Cablevision plans expansion within 18 months to extend along S C 421 serving Stiefeltown Warrenville Gloverville and Langley. The system begun in 1968 is being rebuilt with Jerrold Electronics equipment. Expansion targets 10 000 to 12 000 subscribers and adds two way capacity and more channels.

Gas and Oil Prices Seen Rising Nationwide

Analysts forecast a new round of price hikes by OPEC members including Libya Indonesia and Venezuela with gasoline and heating oil to rise about eight cents a gallon in the United States. Libya's move to raise per barrel price to forty one dollars was expected to be mirrored by Algeria and Nigeria.
