Census estimates foretell House seat shift toward South and West

The Census reapportionment eyed from 1999 figures projects Arizona and Texas to gain two seats each, while New York and Pennsylvania lose two apiece. California may gain one as Colorado Florida Georgia Nevada also expected to gain. The final shift hinges on Thursday's Census totals and could put Montana or Georgia in the last seat.

Snow Hope Fades as Drizzle Forecast for Aiken Area

Aiken residents expect snow but AccuWeather reports drizzle will dominate the forecast. No significant precipitation is expected over the next five days, with cloudy skies Friday through Monday and the clearest day Sunday. Temperatures stay cold with highs around 40 and lows in the 20s.

Nuclear group marks successful year at Savannah River Site anniversary

Citizens for Nuclear Technology Awareness CNTA celebrated the Savannah River Site 50th anniversary with a series of public events. Led by executive director Mal McKibben CNTA includes corporate members such as Westinghouse Bechtel BNFL Inc. and Raytheon. Events ranged from a February exhibit at the Aiken County Historical Museum to a May technical symposium and September PADUE tours. CNTA also sponsored reunions for former residents Ellenton Dunbarton Meyers Mill and partnered with USC Aiken to offer essay contests for students in September and October SEED Day activities were planned for children.

Unclaimed Dead Remembered in Calvary Cemetery Ceremony

In Calvary Cemetery four small urns rest beside four granite headstones for Louise Foxx Essie Lee Edwards James Thomas Taylor and John Martin. Coroner Sue Townsend led a solemn farewell as donors from a church funeral home and monument company funded the memorial after months of searching found no kin to claim the bodies.

Burial for Unclaimed a Community Honor Ceremony

The coroner spoke at a Beech Island burial ceremony praising Sue Townsend for aiding the unclaimed deceased. Mrs. Whingther and Betty Stepler attended, praising the pastor Rev George for comforting readings from Genesis Matthew and Ecclesiastes. The service emphasized God's grace and eternal life for those with no mourners.

Spartanburg SLED probes new Spartanburg video game terminals

State investigators may examine Li’l Cricket convenience stores in Spartanburg where machines offer Internet time for $20 for 100 minutes and also a game where a computer picks numbers with winnings paid out. State Rep John Hawkins says this resembles video gambling and called for SLED to investigate. First Link defends the kiosks as prize giveaways and Internet access devices, with machines tested in 10 locations across Spartanburg, Greenville, Myrtle Beach and Rock Hill.
