Teachers urged to stay on at Mount Pleasant SC school

Principal Tom Lee of James B. Edwards Elementary in Mount Pleasant says he will retire under a new state program that lets 11 retirement eligible teachers and state employees keep working while pension money is held in a savings account. Next month, 2542 state workers will retire and 1858 will return to work. Lee has led Edwards since 1961 and calls the plan the best education measure yet from the Legislature. Fifty six district employees have joined the Teacher and Employee Retention Incentive Program.

Postholiday gift exchanges and clearance sales abound in Aiken

Retailers report brisk returns as Christmas gifts are exchanged and marked down. In Aiken on Tuesday crowding was heavy in parking lots and aisles while line length for exchanges varied by store.
