Attic fire delays re opening of hall

A fire in the attic of the Aiken Thoroughbred Racing Hall of Fame and Museum delayed its planned January reopening. Firefighters contained the blaze quickly, with water damage affecting photos race record books and possibly racing silks. City crews moved exhibits to safety, and officials expect most items to be salvaged after drying.

Beaufort chosen to seat Wise jury in Hastings murder case

Circuit Judge Thomas W. Cooper announced Beaufort will supply the jury pool for the Wise murder trial with hearings set to begin next week. Jurors 65 and older may be excused, and Wise faces possible death penalty if convicted when the trial opens in Aiken January 22. Beaufort jurors will be moved to Aiken and sequestered during the trial.

State reaches 4M mark Census shows growth in state

South Carolina now has more than 4 million people up 625000 in the past decade the Census Bureau said Thursday The April 1 count was 4 012 012 up 15 percent from 1990 The 15th fastest growth rate in the nation is noted while the U S population rose 13 percent to 281 421 906 Analysts had not expected the state to top 4 million until about 2005 per statisticians
