City of Aiken Origin and Charter Details
Before the railroad arrival the area was sparsely settled. In 1834 Alfred Dexter and C C Pascalis drafted a city plat for 150 foot boulevards and a grid of avenues and streets named for South Carolina counties. Aiken was chartered December 19 1685 and governed by an intendant and four wardens appointed by Barnwell District. The city honored William Aiken, first president of a canal and railroad company, and Blackville honors Alexander Black who helped build the Charleston to region railroad.
