With only two months to the deadline and no applicants, Miss Aiken County may miss the Miss South Carolina Pageant. The current pageant owners have not renewed rights, and the Miss South Carolina Pageant official says no group has applied. If no pageant is held by March 1, 2000, Aiken County will be unrepresented. Interested parties may contact the provided numbers.
Eight people from Granitev ille and Warrenville areas were arrested by narcotics investigators on felony drug charges. The Aiken County Sheriff's Office says the probe began in March and produced 48 counts across eight individuals, including Logan Hooper and Melvin Jackson Jr.
Det. Wendell Hall of the Aiken Department of Public Safety warns that the Christmas season boosts opportunities for thieves. Aiken Chief of Police Pete Frommer notes burglaries and thefts rise in December with 21 automobile break-ins reported in December 1998 in Aiken.

An early morning fire destroyed a gray single story shotgun style house at 566 Chesterfield Street with no injuries reported. The resident, who had started a fire to combat nighttime cold, was away at the time and returned to find the interior gutted as ADPS arrived around 2 30 am.
Aiken County Council will review resolutions tonight to authorize the chairman to sign contracts for the Wire Road Detention Center. The facility will replace the Hampton Avenue Detention Center by 2001 and includes bids for electrical, plumbing, heating and cooling, electronic security, sprinkler systems, and food service.
Aiken County Council to discuss resolutions on a new county jail at tonight’s 7 p.m. meeting. A 5-4 vote at the Nov. 2 session rejected halting the project and rebidding. The agenda includes a public hearing on a deed for Sage Mill Industrial Park water and sewer lines and incentives agreements for a 14 acre Sage Mill tract.
The Department of Energy approved Westinghouse Savannah River Company to operate the Replacement High Level Waste Evaporator at SRS. The unit reduces liquid waste volume from defense materials production, freeing tank space and matching the output of two existing evaporators. Construction began in 1991 with safety and readiness reviews completed.
