After months of discussion the Aiken County Council unanimously approved the Archer Pay-for-Performance Salary Plan. It assigns pay based on job value and customer contact rather than across-the-board raises. Funding for raises begins January at a cost of 564700 with full funding in 2003-2004 estimated at 1 million.
Aiken Board of Zoning Appeals granted a special exception for Rose Hill Estate at 221 Greenville St to operate up to ten bedrooms as an overnight guest facility. Stephen and Eva Mueller plan to reside in the main house and rent cottages, with regulations on outdoor noise, curfews, parking, and vegetation buffering. The unanimous vote followed some neighbor concerns about traffic.
Activist Glenn Wilson, known for pushing creationism in local schools, reported his Christian flag was removed from his front yard on Tuesday. He left the American flag intact and later put the American flag back up upside down as a distress signal.
Aiken County will sell 24 miniature horses after taking custody earlier this year when a dead horse was found on Sandra Croy’s property. The contract aims to stop ongoing upkeep costs borne by county taxpayers. Croy will sell the horses to Frank Lee Hum ses, page 4A.
Aiken County and North Augusta call for renaming the Bobby Jones Expressway in South Carolina to Palmetto Parkway. The two councils adopt resolutions urging state and local entities to rename the Savannah River crossing of I-20 and encourage other governments to follow suit.
