Mayor Bob Salley says the Chitlin Strut will likely continue in Salley but requires major changes and more volunteer help plus sponsorships. The town council agreed to press on with hopes of balancing expenses, with past costs for entertainment, fireworks, and toilets totaling about ten thousand dollars while 6,500 to 7,000 attendees are needed to break even.
Local residents and officials praised the Aiken Department of Public Safety during a CALEA accreditation session. Director Pete Frommer noted pride as assessors listened to about 25 speakers on the department's daily work and community impact. Janet Morris highlighted PACT officers aiding downtown revitalization and a personal moment when Sgt. Besley arrived within two minutes during her husband’s heart attack.
ROB NOVIT reports that South Carolina must accelerate academic progress to hit 2010 education goals. S.C. Oversight Committee chair Bob Staton says PACT must begin giving usable diagnostic data for classrooms. if not, improvement may stall and validity may be questioned.
Aiken County schools will get seven of 220 buses funded by a 14 million allocation from the S C Education Lottery. Five buses go to the Aiken County bus shop and two to Edgefield County for outlying schools. Transportation director Carol Verenes says a bus for each of seven high schools is planned.
The Senate GOP plans a Jan 6 session to decide if Trent Lott’s leadership poses a liability after his BET interview and past Thurmond tribute. Lott apologized again for nostalgic remarks on segregation, saying his actions matter more than words and pledging to help minorities and all Americans.
