Bolivian officials say a hijacker and the airliner’s pilot were killed during a refueling stop at Cochabamba after security forces boarded the plane. The copilot was wounded and passengers were allowed to disembark. The government blames a Bolivian and foreign leftist plot for the attempt to eliminate government figures.
Rome AP reports on the ninth day of balloting with 475 of 1008 deputies voting and 509 abstentions. Catholic and Marxist blocs cling to distant candidates as no compromise candidate emerges and the marathon election enters its 14th ballot with Saturday pending.
AP reports entertainer Maurice Chevalier, 83, hospitalized at Necker Hospital for kidney deficiency, showed marked improvement though still in serious condition after an excellent night and positive medical bulletin from the kidney center.
East and West Germany signed an agreement in Bonn to simplify travel into isolated West Berlin. State Secretaries Egon Bahr and Michael Kohl initialed the pact in Berlin, detailing steps to implement the Berlin Accord of September 3. Final effect hinges on a full set of signatures from the Big Four and ratification by the Soviet Union and West Germany.
In Montreal a police officer was killed during a car ticketing near a department store as three bandits, fleeing a crowded scene, opened fire with a machine gun. They escaped, leaving behind a sack containing the store payroll of 50,000 dollars. a fourth man may have driven the getaway car. Constable Jean-Guy Sabourin, 32, is the victim. a string of recent attacks has left five wounded.

Paratroopers and rangers with U S air strikes reported 47 NVA killed near Chup, as about 6 000 troops plus 100 plus armored vehicles swept the plantation. The operation is part of a 25 000 man campaign launched November 22 to halt North Vietnamese forces and sever supply lines.
