An USAF F4 Phantom crashed near Phnom Penh while supporting Cambodian troops. Cambodian helicopter rescued the two crew members who parachuted to safety with no serious injuries. The crash cause is unknown and the aircraft is listed as the 8,053rd U.S. loss in Indochina.
John Linley Frazier, calm in court, receives the gas chamber term for the 1970 Santa Cruz Hills murders. He fatally shot Dr. Victor Ohta and four others, dumping bodies in a swimming pool, as prosecutors describe an environmental protection motive.
The Johnny Express, a Bahama Lines freighter owned by Cuban exiles, was seized after a Cuban gunboat attack. Captain Jose Villa reported mass casualties and pleaded for Coast Guard aid as the ship, towed toward Cuba, carried 14 crew members including two Americans. The incident follows the seizure of the Lyla Express ten days earlier.
U.S. command said two Americans were killed in combat in Vietnam last week with 56 wounded, the lowest weekly death toll since Oct. 30. An additional 38 soldiers died in non hostile incidents, including 34 Americans killed in a December 3 helicopter crash, totaling 45,619 American deaths since Jan 1, 1961.
After 32 months of trial and 106 witnesses, Col. Oran K. Henderson faces a jury verdict on charges of covering up the My Lai massacre. The panel of two generals and five colonels will retire to deliberate after judge Col. Peter S. Wondolowski reads legal instructions.
Price Commission Chair C Jackson Grayson announces price controls on doctors fees and hospital rates aimed at cutting health service cost inflation by at least half. Providers may raise prices by an average of 2.5 percent if cost justification is shown.
A $1 715 412 contract for the Aiken Technical Education Center was awarded to A J Kellos Construction Company Inc of Augusta. Phase I covers three buildings about 65 000 square feet, hosting offices classrooms labs and library near U S Highway 1 between Aiken and North Augusta with capacity for about 800 students.
In Bordentown at Yardville Correctional Center about 100 inmates seized two hostages and controlled a wing. Gov. Cahill sent a 50-man state police force to the scene as negotiations continued. Hostages Richard A. Seidl and Ira Friedman believed unharmed. Damage minimal. disturbance began about 1 p.m. Wednesday in the south wing.
Prime Minister Indira Gandhi announced that Dacca is the free capital of a free country after Lt Gen AAK Niazi signed surrender papers for about 80 000 Pakistani troops in East Pakistan. Indian forces entered Dacca and operations continue on the western front as the war ends in the east.
Senators Strom Thurmond and W J Bryan Dorn received the Sixth Biennial Distinguished Award from Americans for Constitutional Action. ACA President Charles A McManus praised them for voting records defending the Constitution and promoting individual rights, sound money, growth, and national defense. The acceptance did not imply agreement with all ACA principles.
Christmas donations are sought for Aiken County through The Salvation Army and the Aiken Jaycees. Salvation Army funds will supply food and toys, while Jaycee funds support a shopping spree for more than 100 needy children on December 18. Donors may mail to The Salvation Army P.O. Box 439 or Jaycee Shopping Tour Funds P.O. Box 707. A letter from the Jaycees depicts two foster sisters hoping Santa visits them, and another letter asks for Christmas help due to illness and lost work.
About 100 youths aged 4 to 12 from the Aiken Welfare Department will shop under the sponsored Christmas Shopping Tour by the Aiken Jaycees. Last year each child spent roughly $12 on clothing and small gifts for family members.

Miss Mary Ann Skinner has resigned as director of the county welfare department effective December 30 to accept a position with the State Department of Public Welfare in Columbia. The county board accepted her resignation at a meeting last night. Chairman Lee Barnes noted she cited marriage and a move to Columbia as reasons. Skinner had been appointed acting director after the July 1 retirement of Mrs Wilhelmina Moody, who had led the office since its establishment.
