A Gallup Poll finds the nations economy is the No 1 problem for 41 percent of 1503 respondents. The survey shows rising concern over the economy compared with the Vietnam War with 32 percent trusting Democrats to handle major issues and 22 percent backing Republicans.

An Air Force pilot Capt. Donald Henderson 25 Denver Colo was trapped in a ditched twin engine Caribou C7 about 25 miles west of San Francisco. A Western Air Rescue Service helicopter from Hamilton Navy base lowered pararescuers as the plane sank, saving Henderson two minutes before it disappeared. Two crewmen escaped the wreck unharmed.
A wall pact signed in East Berlin grants West Berliners three visiting days annually in Communist controlled East Germany. It also creates a swap of about 100 acres for direct access to West Berlin enclaves inside the east. In the closest strike to Hanoi since the Son Tay raid, a U S fighter-bomber attacked anti aircraft defenses within 90 miles of the capital as Hanoi reported four U S planes shot down over the weekend. The U S command noted an F 166 fighter-bomber near Laos detected a radar site tracking it. the pilot fired a missile, the site ceased operation, and the action occurred within a mile of the Laotian border and 9 miles west-southwest of Hanoi. It marked the 98th U S strike inside North Vietnam this year. Communist forces marked the Indochina war’s 25th anniversary with attacks in Vietnam Laos and Cambodia. In Laos, Pathet Lao troops overran a Thai firebase on the Plain of Jars, capturing two howitzers and two other pieces of artillery, the second allied position to fall in 24 hours.

In Northern Ireland a new wave of bomb blasts killed four Roman Catholic teenagers aged 18 and 19 over the weekend and a fifth person died in a collision with an army vehicle. The toll reaches 203 in nearly 242 years of sectarian conflict. A 15 pound bomb exploded in a car found in Magherafelt, 30 miles north of Belfast, per a British army spokesman.
A flu and respiratory ailment outbreak at Aiken County Hospital leads to a quarantine limiting visitors to two per patient. Hospital administrator Sam Nesbit says the policy increases efficiency and cleanliness and may continue after the epidemic. ministers and friends adapt by calling or leaving cards.
