President Bush’s envoy for Israel and the Palestinians, retired Marine Gen Anthony Zinni, is ordered back to Washington after three weeks of mediation that yielded no durable cease fire. He will stay engaged and return to the region after consultations with President Bush and Secretary Powell.
President Bush stated that about 300000 jobs could be saved if Congress quickly passes compromise legislation to bolster the economy. Negotiations between Republicans and Democrats resumed but time was running short for an agreement.

Ten years of Christmas in Hopelands brightens Aiken for a decade as crowds of families visit the Hopelands grounds. Grandson Chase, aged four, enjoys the lights, toy train and duck pond skaters while townsfolk sing carols and sip hot cocoa. City official Amanda Breeden says the display grows each year with new locations and a special 25 foot tree decorated by the senior club Pairs and Spares. The event runs nightly from 6 to 9 p.m. through December 26.
A statewide panel will visit Ridge Spring Monetta High School for a comprehensive external review after the school received an unsatisfactory grade on the new report card. Other South Carolina high schools with similar ratings will undergo scrutiny to prepare for the spring exit exam.
