U S envoy departs as Israel conducts major West Bank sweep

In Jerusalem the United States envoy left amid intensified fighting as Israel rounded up dozens of suspected Palestinian militants in the West Bank in the widest operation in 15 months. Eight Palestinians were killed in gun battles with Israeli forces. In Gaza, Israeli warplanes bombed a security compound injuring seven Palestinians.

Man shoots former partner and grandmother at York County complex

Police say a man fatally shot his former common-law wife Wilma Thomas 69 and her granddaughter Shannon Thomas 25 brain dead while they waited to see a judge about a restraining order. The incident occurred in front of the York County law enforcement complex on Thursday.

Graham pushes DOE on plutonium to South Carolina

Rep. Lindsey Graham announced that the National Defense Authorization Act for 2002 would require the DOE to give 30 days notice before shipping plutonium to South Carolina and to submit a disposal plan for facilities to be built in the state. Anti-nuclear group wins MOx hearing

The Atlanta based Georgians Against Nuclear Energy group won the right to another public hearing on the MOx mixed oxide fuel facility proposed for construction at the Savannah River Site. The hearing is part of ongoing public process for the project.

Fuel prices fall in Aiken to under 90 cents a gallon

In Aiken the average price for regular unleaded dropped to 89.9 cents a gallon at Starvin' Marvin's on York Street. Residents Frank Roach and Charlene Johnson praise the discount as shoppers note increased fuel use and higher customer traffic at nearby Depot on Laurens Street while predicting a potential rebound after the holidays.

Embassy to reopen on Sunday in Afghanistan mission

The United States will raise its flag over the reopened Afghan embassy on Sunday marking the first diplomatic presence in 12 years.
