Six cars of the San Francisco Zephyr derailed early on the southern edge of Omaha Nebraska. About 180 passengers and crew were aboard with at least 37 injured and none killed. The derailment occurred ten minutes before the 3 05 a m scheduled Omaha station arrival. Authorities cited no immediate cause.
A House committee report says no evidence of MIAs in Vietnam being held captive or alive. The Pentagon may resume reclassification of 728 Americans listed as missing in action as the inquiry ends.
Gary Gilmore in Salt Lake City calls 32 days in a stripped-down cell before execution cruel punishment as his bid for freedom continues. He urged liberty or death while his lawyers seek legal relief and his mother and opponents await court rulings on halting the death.

The city cites 1958 onward paving in black areas and denies discrimination in services. Allen says he will withhold taxes until his front area is improved. the city notes he has paid no city taxes 1971 to 1976.
State Rep Marion D McGowan asks Attorney General Daniel R McLeod to promptly pursue the investigation of County Council chairman Harold V Graybeal. Gov Edwards forwarded the council's malfeasance resolution to McLeod who promised action soon. Graybeal, replying from Hawaii, dismisses the move as a partisan effort.

Donations to P O Box 707, Aiken S C 29801 will provide Christmas essentials and a shopping experience for families in need, including a mother of eight who has faced long unemployment due to health.
