Black Nuns Pioneer School Mission in Baltimore
In Baltimore in 1829 Mary Elizabeth Lange and Rev James Joubert founded the first U.S. order of black nuns, now 131 sisters running 12 schools in the United States, Costa Rica, and the Dominican Republic. They faced prejudice, including a bishop’s dismissal and segregation in convent life, while Lange’s path toward sainthood gains momentum amid reported miracles.
