Lott Apology Faces Senate Censure Pressure Over Civil Rights Remarks
Eight days after controversial comments, Senate Democrats weigh formal censure of Mississippi Republican Trent Lott as White House and GOP allies seek to limit political damage. At a Pascagoula news conference Lott apologized, denounced segregation, and asked for forbearance while vowing to grow as a leader. Democrats highlight past Dixiecrat ties and a 1948 sample ballot to amplify civil rights concerns.
