An Aiken businessman, Tim Dangerfield, was named by the Sanford transition team to chair a new task force charged with seeking long term reforms in the budget process as agencies and local government confront looming shortfalls. Page 4A.
The Hobby Lobby Creative Center plans a December 30 opening in the former Lowe’s building on Whiskey Road, Aiken. The 59,000 square foot store will employ 65 to 70 people and expand Hobby Lobby to 290 stores in 25 states with plans for 25 new and relocation of 10 outlets next year. The company began in Oklahoma City in 1972 and now ships more than 60,000 items per store, with buyers sourcing art supplies, home décor, fabrics, and furniture worldwide.
Boston Cardinal Bernard Law steps down as archbishop after nearly a year of abuse revelations and church cover ups. Pope John Paul II accepted the resignation. Law remains a cardinal and could take another post. The Boston scandal sparked nationwide accusations, lawsuits, and survivor anger.
Community and ARMC staff join the 11th annual Christmas at the Lake as students from Aiken and South Aiken high schools, plus New Ellenton and other elementary groups, perform in a rainless outdoor evening of song and fellowship. The Aiken Elementary choir, led by Kimberly Bedenbaugh, delivers music including Do You Hear What I Hear with sign language.

Gasper Ren Toole told December graduates at a commencement, praising USC Aiken’s educational experience. Toole, chairman of the Aiken County Commission on Higher Education, helped found USCA, a project started 41 years ago, and spoke during the ceremony.
Two local funeral home owners released a statement Thursday amid reports they plan to merge. The South Carolina Board of Funeral Services approved the transfer of Rivers Funeral Home and Shellhouse Funeral Home ownership, but the sale remains not finalized. Both owners declined comment, saying details are not done yet, and emphasized service will continue as usual.
