In Boston an AP report states a blood test can indicate if swollen lymph nodes due to the AIDS virus signal progression to AIDS. Doctors could start treatment earlier, as swollen nodes are a key symptom of AIDS related complex, ARC.
The Board of Corrections released a position paper stating that a private company could not operate a state prison as efficiently or cheaply as the government. The panel said it could not support moves toward privately run state prisons in South Carolina.

The 101st Airborne was among those on board en route to Fort Campbell Kentucky. Witnesses described a massive explosion illuminating the sky. Weather was light snow and overcast. The plane had refueled in Cologne after leaving Cairo. Arrow Air owned the aircraft.
President Reagan set to sign a law setting the national debt limit above two trillion dollars and end deficits by 1991. Congress races to finish year bills while tax reform and farm legislation face late-stage battles, with stopgap funding and defense, foreign aid, and Interior bills under negotiation.
President Reagan launched a last minute push for 40 to 50 Republican votes to keep his tax overhaul plan alive after a House vote refused to consider rival plans.
