The Aiken Standard will become an afternoon newspaper starting Monday after years as a morning paper. The change follows studies of reader habits and advertiser needs and aims to provide a better product for subscribers and advertisers. Prepaid subscriptions will be credited to the carrier delivering the paper.
A South Korean airliner with 51 Koreans aboard was diverted to North Korea on Thursday amid claims of air piracy by the North. The jet took off from Kangnang toward Seoul with 47 passengers and four crew. radar tracked the plane to Wonsan on the east coast.
The Soviet Union launched Cosmos 314, the 314th unmanned satellite in the Cosmos series dating to 1962. The mission details were not disclosed, with the craft placed in a 305 to 175 mile Earth orbit at 71 degrees, completing an initial orbit in 91.9 minutes.
Egyptian archeologists uncover a 350 by 100 foot Pharaonic temple from the Third Dynasty dating over 4700 years. The site near the Eastern Desert yields numerous statues and a stone pillar inscribed with King Titi Heliographic text. The find will be added to Pharaonic treasures the Egyptian National Museum hopes to sell in January.
The Dow Jones average fell 0.46 to 783.53 as late trading pushed the market back to the starting point after a brief morning rally. Eldon Grimm of Walston & Co. cited no rush to bid prices higher amid tight money and expectations of lower 1970 corporate profits.
Newark chief municipal judge James Del Mauro was suspended after he refused to answer federal grand jury questions about city government corruption. He asserted his constitutional rights against self incrimination when asked about his 1966 to 1968 income tax returns.

Saigon reports mounting enemy action north of the city and in the Mekong Delta with higher weekly casualties. Two helicopter pilots shot down Nov. 2 in the central highlands, WO Michael T. Peterson and Sgt. Vernon C. Shepard, were released by the enemy and will reunite with families. Both suffered malnutrition and leg wounds but were in good condition.

Washington AP reports the Senate passed the tax reform bill on Thursday by 69 to 22. Republicans and Democrats traded charges of fiscal irresponsibility in a highly charged political issue. Two Democrats crossed the aisle to support the measure.
Strom Thurmond will be principal speaker at the USS Sumter launching tomorrow at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard. Mrs. Thurmond, Nancy Moore of Aiken, serves as ship sponsor for the $30 million LST of the Newport class. Sumter mirrors the Newport design and follows other Newport-class ships under construction.
President Nixon signed the 4.756 billion Public Works Appropriation Bill funding the Atomic Energy Commission water pollution grants and flood control, navigation, power, and irrigation projects. North Carolina and South Carolina items include New Hope Reservoir funding and Cooper River planning, with allocations for Cape Lookout and Randleman Reservoir among others.
