Philip T. Barnum, 50, died at University of Michigan Hospital 15 months after receiving a heart from a prison inmate. He watched his daughter graduate and his son wed during transplant life. doctors attributed death to heart rejection and pneumonia. The donor, Herman Opdenhof, died of a stroke while an inmate at Southern Michigan Prison.
Libyan broadcaster in Tripoli says a Sunday attempt to overthrow the leftist government failed. The report claims the plotters were misled by foreign elements as Libya seeks to remove foreign military bases. Support cables from Libyan groups followed the announcement.
Hans Peter Tschudi interior minister of Switzerland was elected president by the National Assembly for 1970. The 56 year old Socialist won 166 of 184 votes in a ceremonial parliamentary vote. He previously served as Basel University professor and was Swiss president in 1965.
Nearly 500 Aquinas College students in Grand Rapids Michigan fasted Tuesday including the Christmas dinner to show sympathy for war torn Biafra. Saga Foods will donate 350 to 450 dollars saved on food costs to an Aquinas alumnus aiding two relief units. 485 students participated as organizer Theresa Grywalski said action was needed beyond talk.
About 700 British troops from the 1st Battalion Royal Green Jackets will be pulled out of Northern Ireland next week and not replaced. The Ulster garrison will then number about 7,000, with reinforcements available if needed.
Five men in military disguises burst into a Palermo construction firm in a M afia style settlement of accounts. They fired on those inside with pistols as they awaited the attack.
