The Aiken Standard unveils its first afternoon edition with plans to improve local news delivery and readership experience. Management acknowledges reader protests but expresses confidence in a smoother transition and continued dedication to the Aiken area.
Eighteen and a half inches of rain fell in 24 hours at Changi Royal Air Force base. RAF helicopters lorries and buses evacuated at least 93 marooned people including many children from a convalescent home and Red Cross crippled children's facility.
Six Israeli jet fighters attacked the northern Jordan Valley killing two civilian motorists on a roadway in Manshia Shuneh and Mashreh areas. Jordanian military said ground fire answered. Palestinian group claimed rocket strike on Beisan causing fires. ambulances carried the wounded.
Two Turkish teaching unions representing about half of the nation's 130000 teachers launched a four day strike over pay conditions and the expulsion of 172 Peace Corps volunteers. Education Minister Orhan Oguz warned of discipline and possible jail terms for strikers.
United States and Soviet Union closed the ninth SALT session in Helsinki and moved toward full scale negotiations. Both sides expressed satisfaction and expect a successful conclusion in two to three days as Moscow reportedly advised delays. Delegations were led by Gerard C. Smith and Vladimir Seme nov with the pace slowing near completion.
More than 1,200 people attended a $100 plate dinner in Houston as the National Jewish Fund honored American astronauts. Proceeds fund planting a forest in Israel to honor the space corps. Apollo 12 crewmen Charles Conrad Jr., Richard F. Gordon Jr., and Alan L. Bean attended along with Apollo 14 commander Alan B. Shepard and officials including Gov. Preston Smith and Mayor Louie Welch who praised the spacemen.
The Supreme Court ruled five to three that Negro homeowners may not be barred from facilities open to white neighbors, upholding integration in public recreation areas.
Aiken County launches an EPDA funded program to create 20 reading teachers. Trainees, all scoring A on the National Teachers Exam, will work in 19 schools focusing on reading improvement to prevent problems rather than remediate.
City Detective V. J. Ray said three Aiken firms were checked Sunday for blue law violations but will not be charged. RX Drugs Inc Eckerds Drug Co and Jacobs Pharmacy Co were visited. no arrests or store closures occurred. The blue laws allow certain items like food and drugs but ban nonessentials such as toys radios and TVs. The Aiken Merchants Association was asked to notify members to comply.
Brig Gen Omar Torrijos, Panama's chief of the National Guard, was removed while in Mexico City for a horse race. A military junta announced his ouster and said he was replaced by officers from his own top posts. He had co led the 1968 coup that toppled President Arnolfo Arias after 11 days in office.
President Nixon plans a 6 p.m. EST address to update efforts to end the Vietnam War. The White House says the speech extends his November plan to bring fighting to a close and may announce another large troop pullout by Christmas.
Aiken businessman R. L. Morton was arrested Friday and arraigned on a warrant charging breach of trust with fraudulent intent. He posted $1,000 bail and awaits grand jury action at January term of General Sessions Court. The Farmers and Merchants Bank filed the charges. Detective W. J. Ray served the warrant. Morton ran a downtown TV and appliance store for years before it closed.
The Ai ken office of Social Security opened on schedule on Chesterfield Street as a branch of the Augusta office. It serves most of Aiken County plus Allendale Barnwell and Edgefield counties with staff and equipment provided by Augusta. Two field representatives will visit five stations weekly at specified courthouses and post offices.
The Aiken Jaycees seek donations to fund a Christmas Shopping Tour for about 400 eligible children in Aiken County. Weekend contributions totaled 187.49 bringing the grand total to 1367.49 with donors including John Stewart 15 Tom Dill 5 Anonymous 1 Dr Niles A Borop 10 The Crest 5.
Prosecution seeks 12 years hard labor for three Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine members charged with killing a trainee pilot during a gun attack on an Israeli airliner at Zurich's Zurich Airport February 18. An Israeli agent faces a two year sentence for killing a fourth commando after disarmament.
