Hopelands Gardens hosts the 20th Annual Christmas in Hopelands as thousands of lights brighten the grounds. The free event runs 6 to 9 30 p.m. tonight and Sunday and on December 15 to 23 and 26, with music hot chocolate cider and cookies for visitors. About 100000 lights cover the gardens and over 1.5 miles of lit paths.
A weekend of parades unfolds with the Valley Christmas Parade at 3 p.m starting at LBC Middle School in Windsor. The Windsor event is followed by a 3:30 p.m. parade from the old Mt Beulah Road schoolhouse. Sunday brings a 2 p.m. procession from Park Avenue to Laurens Street ending near Trinity Lutheran Home. Jackson parade lineups start at 1 p.m. behind Jackson Middle School on Georgia Avenue.

Keep the tree in water, make a fresh flat 12 inch cut, use a sturdy stand with about a quart per inch of trunk, place away from heat and direct sun, avoid old wires, use cooler LED lights, don’t overload outlets, check water daily, turn off lights when away, and recycle the tree instead of burning it.
The Savannah River Site announces its 2012 free public tour series with 1,500 seats across 30 tours. Tours start January 10 at 12:30 p.m. from the Center for Research on Highway 278, with 50 participants each. registration opens Monday at 9 a.m. at www.srs.gov or by phone.
